What is concepts in mathematics

In early grades, students learn the concept of fractions for example, one-half using hands-on experiences with area and length models. Later, they discover they can find one half of a set of objects and they can mark a point on a number line that is half the distance from 0 to 1.

As students progress to higher grades, they continue to use number lines and area models to learn about fractions greater than 1, and again as they begin to understand the meaning behind operating with fractions.

Language and Discourse A conceptual approach encourages students to share with and explain to their peers the connections they see between and among mathematical concepts.

Most importantly, students are encouraged to apply these understandings and build upon their knowledge to think and reason mathematically in problem-solving situations that are rich and meaningful to them in their everyday life.

As educators, it is our responsibility to prepare students for their future. We now know that higher-order thinking and creative problem-solving are the new in-demand skills for the 21st century. To build these skills, students need time to develop deep understandings of concepts and the connections between them. In short, we must give students visual models and the opportunity to discuss their thinking, so they can learn mathematics conceptually.

Look at the way visual models are used and how students are asked to share their thinking and explain connections between those models. Share this article. View Our Location. The online session is as effective as the in person learning. Kudos to Suzie and her Team. July 13, Great staff! Many national groups have researched the efficacy and importance of using conceptual math in the classroom. When students only learn procedures, they often find themselves stuck and confused in higher level math courses. Conceptual math aims to help students understand why the steps work so that they can approach problem solving with a variety of strategies.

Further, conceptual math provides a means to communicate mathematical ideas, and the ability to transfer that working knowledge to higher levels of problem solving and to other fields of study, such as science or engineering. This is not to say that procedural math is not an important part of the overall picture.

In fact, it is integral, working together with conceptual learning to move a student from concrete to abstract understanding. Mathematical competency relies on both conceptual and procedural competency. MathBRIX allows students to use visual math and digital manipulatives to acquire new skills, problem solve, and practice curriculum. This gives students the opportunity to practice the same core competency in a multitude of ways, coming up with new ways to solve similar problems.

This ability to utilize multiple approaches to solve a single problem is one of the pillars of conceptual learning. Utilizing technology readily available in most modern elementary classrooms, MathBRIX is easy for students to use and targeted to individual learning needs.

Used 15 minutes a day a couple of times a week, MathBRIX is a fun, game-based program rooted firmly in conceptual learning that makes an ideal supplement to any classroom serving students of all abilities aged years old.
